In 1889, Asaka Senior High School was established as being only
one senior high school in Fukushima Prefecture. Such famous writers
as Chogyu Takayama, Masao Kume and a historian Kanichi Asakawa graduated
from the school. It is now used as a museum for history of Asaka.

The Hall was built in commemoration of administration of Koriyama
City in 1964.
The western style hall is romantic as well as Renaissance style,
and it is very attractive. It has been popular among citizens as
a symbol of Koriyama City, being used for concert.

In 1874, Kaiseikan Hall was built as a local assembly hall. When
Emperor Meiji toured the Tohoku area, he used it as his temporary
quarters. In 1960, it was designated as the important prefectural
cultural asset as Meiji quasi-western building. Today, it houses
an exhibition of folk artifacts in Koriyama and it is open to public
with the official residence of Asaka pioneering (the former residence
of Tateiwa family).

In Muromachi period, Yukimura, a painting priest, used this hermitage
as the foothold for his activities during his old age. No sound
except the murmur of the wind can be heard. Tomb of natural stone,
drooping cherry trees of 100 years and old plum trees are all quietly
breathing.

The Oshu Road roadside pine trees |

It is said that Haiku poet Matsuo Basho searched along the highway
for the legendary "hazy curtain of flowers", Hanagatsumi.
The Oshu Highway is one of the five highways of Edo. It takes about
45 minutes to walk along the highway from Hiwada to Fukuyama.

Lord Ito, who governed this district in Kamakura period, combined
3 shrines in Izu Hakone Mishima, his hometown, and transferred it
here. They say that the small shrine behind the temple was a tomb
of Lord Katsuragi.

In front of the Uneme Park, Koshuji Temple (Sodo Sect), Ganzoji
Temple (Shingon Sect) and Jokyoji Temple (Rinzai Sect) are situated
in line. This is a noted place in Katahira because it is very rare
that three different temples stand side by side in Japan. They say
that Lord Ito transferred them to this place around 1500 D.C. Ganzo
Temple has a statue of Kannon with 11 wooden faces designated by
city.

This Buddhist Temple was built in a construction style of late Edo
period, and Jizo Bosatsu (Bodhisattva), which was made by engraving
bones of snakes, was enshrined inside the temple. A legend of "Princess
Sayo Story" related to a spirit snake was said to be a cause
of this temple. 33 Kannon statues, which were worshipped to be Bodhisattvas
offered as human sacrifices to the spirit snake, stand at the bottom
of stonewalls of the backyard. Nearby are historical site related
to this legend, such as holes of the snake and the pillow stone
of the snake. This Temple was designated as a city cultural asset
in 2000.

Aomatsuhama was presented to the Imperial Family as the Imperial
Land as well as Nakanosawa Beach. It was likely to be named by Emperor
Taisho. The beach is shallow for a good distance and very quiet.
The white sands continue on the beach with a row of pine trees,
showing a scenic beauty. At the corner of a woof of the pine trees,
a monument of literature engraved with a phrase appeared in "a
weasel" was built in 1979. It is one of the noted works by
Yutaka Mafune, a play writer born in Konan.
Yutaka Mafune wrote "a weasel" and "Yamasando, or
stone-paved approach in a mountain" being set in Konan other
than " ".

| The Ruins of Utsumine

Utsumine Mountain is 677 meters high. A hard-fought battle was waged
here during Nampokucho period. A panoramic view from the summit
is spectacular and it is best suited for hiking to see cherry blossoms
in spring and autumnal tints in fall.

Oanba Tomb Mound consists of 5 tomb mounds, and No.1 and No.2 ancient
tombs were designated as national historical assets. Especially,
No.1 tomb is 83m in length with 2 front stages and 3 rear stages,
and it is the largest ancient rectangular Japanese tomb with a rectangular
front in Tohoku District found in 1997. People think that this was
built in the latter part of the initial term of Ancient Tomb period
(Late 4th century). A long and large wooden coffin was found at
the top of the tomb in the back, and ring style stone products (stone
rings), weapons and farming tools were found as grave goods. Please
contact them before visiting this tomb mound.

Shizuka Gozen adored Minamoto no Yoshitsune so much that she followed
him down to Oshu and committed suicide by throwing herself into
a pond. This shrine was built to worship her spirit. This was renewed
without using a nail in Tenmei period.
